Our Jungle Road to Tokyo, first published in 1950, is the World War II memoir of U.S. Army Lt. General Robert Eichelberger. Eichelberger served as a commander under General Douglas MacArthur in the Pacific from the early days of the war in New Guinea to the to the recapture of the Philippines in 1944-45, and on to the occupation of Japan after the war. No mere 'desk-jockey,' Eichelberger was often at the front lines, leading and encouraging his troops during intense, difficult battles in often hostile terrain. The book also offers insights into the broader strategy of the Pacific campaign, includes dialogs with General MacArthur and other leading figures of the War, and 16 pages of photographs.

A good personal chronical of one of the best American generals under MacArthur. It is not a self-serving ego trip as some others are, to be sure he does give himself credit when due, but he is also quick to note that so many others were doing their part with extraordinary valor.I found the latter part of the book most interesting, as it gave some additional insight to exceptional renaissance of a concurred Japan that Douglas MacArthur led with carefully selected persons of sterling quality. Too bad he did not have controle of Europe, as the Iron Curten would not have fallen.
A good follow up is Seymour Morris' "Supreme Commander," a recent release.

MY FATHER WAS THEIR, THE RAINBOW DIVISION. l HAVE THE DIVISION BOOK SENT TO ALL AFTER THE WAR. A TRUE TEST OF MEN FIGHTING FOR A CAUSE. HE IS GONE NO, BLESS HIM AND ALL THAT WERE THERE FOR US.
Vividly portrays the improvisations necessary in the early years of this neglected and now too often forgotten theater. It was also interesting to learn how hot the "liberated" areas remained with tens of thousands of Japanese soldiers emerging from the jungles after the war's end.As Eighth Army commander, Eichelberger has the view from the top, yet constant front line visits give a sense of the sharp end. I would have like more maps.
Interesting first hand senior leader account of SW Pacific theater. Interesting view of friction and rivalry between general officers and allied nations. Interesting discussion of weak Air Force close air support (CAS) and strong praise for marine CAS - a view that persisted in the 80s and 90s when I served in the Army. I enjoyed the anecdotes and memories of this often overlooked leader.
We can name many of the Generals of the war in Europe, however when we think of the Pacific we only hear MacArthur. General Eichelberger ranks with Patton and Bradly. Eichelberger takes a solders view of his superior, it must not have been easy to have such a flamboyant boss. An excellent read from a post war perspective.
