To the outside world, it looks like Maya Somers lost everything in Hurricane Katrina, her husband, the bungalow they shared and her job. But inside Maya knows Katrina gave her the gift of a fresh start. She and her yellow lab, Doodle Bug, leave the destruction of the Gulf Coast for North Carolina and settle in Oriental, a quaint fishing village on the Pamlico Sound. In her new home by the water, Maya begins to rebuild her life. She knows she needs to heal from her abusive marriage and the trauma of Hurricane Katrina but isn’t sure where to start. It isn’t long before teachers appear to help her Hazel, her elderly but spirited neighbor who has secrets of her own, Travis, a handsome kayak guide to whom she immediately feels a strong attraction, Buster, a crusty old fisherman who always seems to show up just when she needs him, and Bay Witherspoon, the much younger wife of a wealthy attorney who becomes a close friend despite their initial differences. Maya finds the most profound help when she is welcomed into a women’s circle that meets on the banks of Hungry Mother Creek. Gathered with these women, Maya learns that becoming vulnerable and sharing her pain with others is the first step of her healing journey. But what is the second step? Maya isn’t sure but with the help of her loyal yellow lab, her new friends and the peace of living by the water she stays the course. Ultimately Maya finds the healing journey to be messy, tangled and unpredictable, and the end result is nothing she could have ever imagined.

Decent read, good female friendship book, with spirituality also a theme. I enjoyed it but at times shuddered at the grammatical errors. Then and than were mixed up and used incorrectly a few times, and at one point Maya was memorized by a conversation rather than mesmerized. Despite the errors I’d recommend this as a good quick read. More angst than I normally like in a book but the author was dealing with very emotional issues so that was to be expected. I liked most of the characters and cried along with them near the end. Since I live in New Bern NC a lot of the places in the book were familiar to me which is always nice. I think it’s interesting to relate to the area where the characters are living.

Hungry Mother Creek Heather W Cobham 9780991408504 Books Reviews

The best woman's book I've read in a long time. I especially like the location in a place I really like. Sharing life with girl friends is so important.
I really liked the book. No murder, mayhem or big drama. Just life in a small southern town and a woman finding herself. Hope there are more coming from this author.
I could not wait to get my hands on this book! I must say it was worth the wait! I love how it was easy to read and yet went deeper into self discovery and the importance of connecting oneself to others, nature, and a form of spirituality. Maya and the other main characters are so likeable and easy to identify with. I enjoyed the fact the author wrote on traumatic events that can touch each of us without getting too heavy or depressing. I highly recommend reading this book! Kudos to the author!
could have been better if the editor(s) had read it and corrected the several obvious errors that spell check alone would miss. similar style to the Nicholas Sparks books. I was disappointed that Travis' character kind of disappeared from the book after the post-discovery talk he had with Maya about not telling her he was that Baptist minister.
This book was such a joy to read. It was especially neat reading something by someone I know. I enjoyed the way the book detailed and described various things. I also liked that Heather gave perspectives from different characters in the story. I appreciated this, because everyone has a story and a different perception of how things are. Being able to see clearly from their point of view gave a better understanding of their actions and intentions.

This is a wonderful book that deals with self-healing, sisterhood, and independence. This book was an easy, enjoyable read. Take the time to buy this book -- you won't be disappointed!
The characters were well developed and had hidden depths. I loved Maya but found myself getting into the character of Bay. The author did a great job of turning stereotypes over. And the characterization of Oriental is spot on. It is that kind of place.
I read this book in just two sittings. While that used to be my norm, I have two small children now so this is virtually impossible. The book was that good. Set in a picturesque waterfront town, Hungry Mother Creek takes the reader on a ride full of beautiful scenery, complex relationships, and personal healing and restoration. As a reader who has enjoyed books from Nicholas Sparks, with similarly situated settings in eastern NC, I found the author's writing to be much more complex without being "too much", and the character development to be deeper without being boring or too deep. Just perfect! I love it!
